What’s in This Hot Honey Chicken Wings Recipe?

Spicy, sweet, and utterly addictive, these oven-baked hot honey chicken wings come out crispy and delicious! It’s an easy chicken wings recipe that’s a real crowd-pleaser!

Flour: All-purpose flour helps absorb any moisture on the outside of the chicken wings so they become crisp and delicious! Cornstarch: Dries out the surface of the chicken wings just slightly more than flour. Again, we want super crunchy chicken wings! Wings: We like chicken wing portions because the drum and flat are already separated! You can use frozen chicken wings for this recipe, but be sure to let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight and pat dry before using. Butter: Salted butter helps create a sauce to coat the chicken wings. If using unsalted butter, add an extra pinch of salt. Honey: We used Mike’s Hot Honey, but any brand will do.

Hot Honey Recipe for Wings

To make your own hot honey, place ½ cup of honey in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 teaspoons of hot sauce or 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes and stir to combine. Bring to a bubble, about 3 minutes, and then remove from the heat. Allow the honey to cool and then store it in the fridge until ready to use.

How to Store and Reheat

Hot honey chicken wings are best enjoyed on the day they are made. Leftovers will lose their crispiness. Store leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through and crispy.

How to Freeze

Freeze leftover hot honey chicken wings wings in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Allow chicken wings to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Notes from the Test Kitchen

How to Make Hot Honey Chicken Wings Step by Step

Prep: Preheat the oven to 400°F. Set a wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet and set aside. Coat the Wings: Whisk 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch together in a large bowl. Pat 1 pound of chicken wing portions dry with a paper towel. Place them in the large bowl with the cornstarch and flour, tossing to coat. Shake the Wings: Shake off any excess flour and place the chicken wings on the wire rack. Bake the Wings: Bake for 20 minutes. Flip the chicken wings and then bake for an additional 15 minutes. Sauce the Wings: While the chicken wings bake, melt 4 tablespoons of salted butter and ¼ cup of hot honey in a large microwave-safe bowl. Whisk to combine. Add the baked chicken wings to the bowl and toss them in the honey butter. Broil the Wings: Place the chicken wings back on the wire rack and broil for 2-3 minutes or until they are browned and crisp. Be careful, they can burn quickly! Serve immediately. Chicken wings are best enjoyed right when they come out of the oven!
